An enthusiast by the name of Madness! has successfully delidded their AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, resulting in benefits that include lower operating temperatures. A screenshot shared by Madness! suggests that anyone who is brave enough to delid their Ryzen 7 5800X3D chips with 3D V-Cache technology might be rewarded with a processor that runs around 10°C cooler, a welcome improvement based on all of the criticism out there about how hot the CPU can run relative to the majority of its Ryzen 5000 Series siblings even with premium cooling solutions. Delidding the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can also apparently result in a minor performance boost in the form of a slightly higher average max clock rate (4,450 vs. 4,436 MHz). Enthusiasts who are considering delidding the Ryzen 7 5800X3D have been warned to put some proper thought into it first, as the $449 chip comes with various challenges that include its additional layer of L3 cache being on top of the CPU core chiplet. AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a maximum operating temperature of 90°C.

The 8-core Ryzen 5800X3D CPU is built differently than other Ryzen 5000 CPUs. This processor has an additional layer of L3 cache on top of the CPU core chiplet, which theoretically adds a risk of that layer being damaged during delidding the process. The complex delidding of Ryzen 5000 CPUs involves solder heat up and razor cutting around tiny capacitors. There is a lot that can go wrong here. A thin layer of 3D V-Cache certainly does not make it easier.

Madness!! has successfully delidded this processor and claims that his sample is no longer heating up to 90° with Noctua ND-D14 cooler, but it is not explained under what workloads. Nevertheless, it appears that the processor is working.
