Sony Pictures has confirmed that the next Ghostbusters movie will be released on December 20, 2023. Serving as a sequel to last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the new film will see the return of director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan, who previously revealed that they will be taking the Ghostbusters back to where they belong: New York City and their iconic firehouse setting. The very end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife had already teased this progression, with footage of the Ecto-1, now restored by Zeddemore and the rest of the team, driving across a bridge back into the city. It’s unclear how much of a role the original Ghostbusters will have in the upcoming sequel, but it will be complemented by some other projects that include both an animated series and feature for Netflix. Ghostbusters: Afterlife centered on Egon’s daughter and his two grandchildren and has made over $197 million at the worldwide box office since its release in November last year, according to Box Office Mojo.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was held by Sony during the pandemic, when theaters were closed, and was a cornerstone to the Thanksgiving 2021 holiday box office, ultimately making over $200M worldwide.

Also opening on Wednesday, Dec. 20 is Paramount’s feature animation movie The Tiger’s Apprentice and the Warner Bros. musical The Color Purple. On that Friday, Dec. 22, Paramount still has an untitled Star Trek movie on the calendar, and Disney still has Rogue Squadron.

The Ghostbusters franchise for Sony through four movies has grossed over $938M global.
