Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

A follow-up to David Sandberg’s 2019 blockbuster, Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees the return of Zachary Levi as the titular DC Comics character who can transform from boy to superhero by muttering a single word.

Joining Levi and the rest of the Shazam family are Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, who play the villainous goddess Hesper and her sister, Kalypso, respectively. Djimon Hounsou is also back as the ancient wizard Shazam, who gifts Billy Batson his powers in the original film.

Here’s DC’s official write-up for the Shazam character:

When Billy Batson speaks the name of an ages-old wizard, he is transformed into the World’s Mightiest Mortal—Shazam!

Billy Batson’s parents died when he was still a baby. The orphaned child believed he had no one to rely on and had to fend for himself. But one day, he was guided to the Rock of Eternity, where the ancient wizard Shazam waited. The world needed heroes and the boy became the wizard’s new champion, able to transform himself into an adult superhero by calling down a magical bolt of lightning. Now, whenever evil must be stopped or people are in need of help, Earth can rely on the power of Shazam!

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is headed to theaters this Christmas.

The movie will be preceded by Black Adam, which also received a new trailer today at SDCC 2022 and is scheduled for release on October 21, 2022. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as the film’s eponymous antihero, an archenemy of Shazam who wields similar powers, including super strength and flight.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra has confirmed that neither Shazam, nor Superman, will appear in Black Adam.

“Our movie is an original story,” Collet-Serra said. “By the time the movie ends, he doesn’t know who Shazam or Superman is.”
