Crystal Dynamics has shared a short press release to confirm that it has taken control of some of its most beloved game franchises. They include Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain, both of which were previously owned by Square Enix Limited. Embracer Group completed its acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal last month, according to a press release that the Swedish video game and media holding company shared on August 26.

From Crystal Dynamics:

We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including TOMB RAIDER and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited.

As a result of this change, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliate) is now the owner of these games and the controller of the gameplay and personal data related to them. If you’d like to know more, please refer to our new Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

We look forward to taking this new and exciting journey with you!

It’s unclear when the Legacy of Kain franchise will return, but Crystal Dynamics has already confirmed that a new Tomb Raider game is in development. The game is being built on Unreal Engine 5.

“Crystal Dynamics is proud to be a part of the launch of Unreal Engine 5,” said general manager at Crystal Dynamics, Dallas Dickinson, during April’s State of Unreal livestream. “This new engine translates into next-level storytelling in gameplay experiences. Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high quality cinematic action/adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.”
