Netflix announced Henry Cavill’s exit from the popular streaming show yesterday and said that Liam Hemsworth will take over the role in Season 4. Henry Cavill has portrayed The White Wolf since the show debuted on December 20, 2019. Since then, the show and like many other productions experienced numerous delays brought about by the pandemic. Seasons two and three saw their own share of challenges with members of the cast testing positive for COVID-19, including Mr. Cavill this past July, as well as the recasting of other characters during production. The announcement came via Netflix’s TUDUM website where it shared quotes from both actors who posted about the recasting on their respective social media accounts. Mr. Cavill began by expressing his appreciation for Liam and that he’ll “pass the torch with reverence”.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Mr. Hemsworth responded similarly on with excitement about getting the role and reciprocated appreciation to Henry Cavill for his time on the show. He added that he’s been a fan for years and that “I may have big boots to fill,” and is truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.
“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
The Witcher Season 3
Even though Netflix announced Henry Cavill’s exit he’ll still be around for the upcoming third season of the show. Season three’s exact streaming date has not been revealed yet but it is planned for 2023. Co-stars Anya Chalotra (Yennefer of Vengerberg) and Freya Allan (Princess Cirilla of Cintra aka Ciri) will both be returning for Season 3. Anya Chalotra said that her character and Geralt will share a lot more screen time together this season and that the two have a lot to learn from each other.
Meanwhile, the prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is set to begin streaming on December 25. This show is set roughly 1,200 years before the time of Geralt and stars Michelle Yeoh as Scian, a mystical swordmaster.

History disagrees. Will Smith, etc. is known to contribute their talents in multi-projects a year.
The Witcher TV Show should be working on its 5th season, not the 4th and the "go-to" COVID BS is a lame excuse today because if that were really true, well, COVID would've also disrupted Netflix MAIN extremely popular TV series production, Stranger Things, for over a year+ too but it did not (I guess that ENTIRE casts must be COVID immune, huh ?).
Nah, the writing has been on the wall for the lead male protagonist for the entire The Witcher franchise for a while. I hope Hemsworth doesn't get to comfortable with his new gig.

I'm a huge fan of The Witcher (games, books), but the Netflix series has been such an epic disaster that I can't say I care much what they do with it anymore. I don't think the 3rd season is even due until the summer of 2023.
You may be on to something. Witchers have natural immunity to the disease, and I'm sure they have some potion recipes for those who are susceptible.
I've enjoyed the series to be honest. This is surprising to me but it is what it is. I hope they kill off Geralt rather than swap actors.
I've enjoyed the series too - I found the second season dipped a bit (even with the first season's weird time hopping), but Cavill was a surprise to me how good he was in the role. Not a big fan of a recast, but I do feel Hemsworth "looks" more like how I imagine Geralt to look. No idea how he'd act in a mature role, I only remember him from teen-style dramas.
Actually it took nearly 3 years, not 1+, before Stranger Things was able to return but the pandemic was only a part of its delays.

Yeah, I'm mixed on the recast but they probably could've done worse. As is I'm mixed on the show, to begin with. I like it but am not drawn back to rewatch it as much as I would've hoped but to be fair that's true for most things these days.
You mean just like Stranger Things supernatural abilities that were under the same COVID conditions but ST did not miss a beat per year/season deployment?
C'mon now, we all know that any sinister government lab experiments will overpower the Witcher potions any day. ?
We're kind of struggling with this season so far. We just finished the first half last night and it's obvious the showrunners are doing everything possible to turn this into a Game of Thrones clone. The story has always had that element but it didn't have to be the primary focus and it seems the showrunners think that's what everyone wants.
We'll probably watch it until the end of the current season and check out the S4 premiere but I have doubts about how much more beyond that.
