MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries won’t mark the end of the MechWarrior series. Speaking in an interview with the NoGutsNoGalaxy channel, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock confirmed that a new MechWarrior game is in development, one that will be a single-player title. Bullock didn’t say whether this is MechWarrior 6, but fans of the long-running series (est. 1989), which is set in the fictional universe of BattleTech, may be getting an official announcement for the game as early as this year.

Highlights from Bullock, per the 230th episode of the NoGutsNoGalaxy podcast:

Everyone knows we have DLC 4 coming out for MechWarrior 5, and there is another MechWarrior game in development at Piranha. Think of it more in line with MechWarrior 5, but a standalone game, a standalone product. So I guess that’s an exclusive announcement for you, but that’s all I’ll say for now.

It’ll be announced later – don’t know, if I had to guess it may even be until… oh, who knows. Somewhere in 2023. Maybe even as late as the fall, like September or something. So it’ll be a while, you’ll have to wait around to see what that is. But yeah, more in line with a MechWarrior 5-type of experience, meaning it’ll be a game that comes out on all the platforms, PC and console.

[It] follows more of a single-player co-op type of pathway, kind of building off that whole technology base. So it’s not the next online game.

Piranha Games has been responsible for two MechWarrior games: 1) MechWarrior Online, a free-to-play title that was released in 2013 for PC, and 2) MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the latest mainline installment of the franchise, released in May 2021 with four-player PvE co-op. Mercenaries is notable for being the first single-player MechWarrior game since 2002’s MechWarrior 4, which was developed by FASA Studio and Studio MekTek.
