GeForce RTX 4070 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT Gameplay Performance
We are going to focus on the 1440p gameplay performance. We will include DLSS and FSR performance on the same graph in the games that are supported. We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs. Ray Tracing performance will be shown on a separate page.
Returnal
Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled except ray tracing, we have screen-space reflections on. We use the built-in benchmark.

Starting in Returnal at 1440p with EPIC graphics settings, both video cards are very close in performance, but the Radeon RX 6800 XT does edge out performance by 3%. These results are so close though, you cannot tell them apart. At 101FPS or 98FPS the gameplay performance is the same, and very playable on either one. Adding FSR or DLSS upscaling also seems to be extremely close in this game. Both video cards offer the same experience here, with a slight edge over Radeon RX 6800 XT.
Forspoken
Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.

In Forspoken we are running at 1440p with the highest quality settings. Both video cards allow a playable gameplay experience, 90FPS is very smooth and playable, and so is 81FPS. The GeForce RTX 4070 edges out the Radeon RX 6800 XT by 11% in this game. In tough situations in certain parts of this game, like outdoor environments, that 11% can make a difference in improving performance and gameplay. Enabling DLSS and FSR also improves performance, but DLSS does outperform performance here.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II was released on October 27, 2022, on the PC and uses the IW 9.0 gaming engine. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Image Scaling, AMD FSR 1.0, AMD Fidelity FX CAS, and Intel XeSS. We use the highest quality option of each. We customize every graphics setting to the maximum value for the best image quality and enable everything. We use the built-in benchmark.

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare II we are running at 1440p with maximum game settings. In this game, the Radeon RX 6800 XT has a lead over the GeForce RTX 4070, by 11%. Both video cards still offer a playable experience, over 100FPS on either one is very playable in this game. FSR performance on the Radeon RX 6800 XT is 7% faster than the RTX 4070 with DLSS.
F1 2022
F1 2022 was released on June 28th, 2022 on the PC and uses Codemasters Ego engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, AMD FidelityFX, and FSR. We are going to run the game with the highest quality settings of “Ultra High” and TAA+FidelityFX. We will enable DLSS and FSR as needed at the Quality setting for both. We will utilize the built-in benchmark in the Imola track, in dry conditions with a far-chasing cam.

In F1 2022 we are running at 1440p with the highest in-game settings. In this game, the Radeon RX 6800 XT has the largest lead yet at 14% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070. However, once again both video cards offer a more than playable experience at nearly 200FPS. In fact, this game is also very playable on both video cards at 4K as well. With FSR on the Radeon RX 6800 XT performance is 19% faster than the RTX 4070 with DLSS.
Dying Light 2

In Dying Light 2 we are running at 1440p with maximum game settings, and this is a demanding game. Both video cards again allow a playable experience at over 100FPS. The Radeon RX 6800 XT edges out the GeForce RTX 4070 by 7% in performance. With FSR on the Radeon RX 6800 XT performance is 5% faster than the RTX 4070 with DLSS.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December of 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.61 and utilize the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”. This game supports DLSS and FSR2.

We all know how demanding Cyberpunk 2077 is. We are running at 1550p with “Ultra” graphics settings, so this is the highest without ray tracing. Both video cards allow a playable experience over 80FPS, no need for upscaling on either card to enjoy it. In this game, we find the Radeon RX 6800 XT outperforms the GeForce RTX 4070 by 8% which is impressive for how demanding this game is. With FSR performance is 12% faster than the RTX 4070 with DLSS.

I thought nvidia was already dropping the RTX 4070 in price by $50, isn't that so?
They're giving a $50 rebate to partners. Meanwhile, though, I've already begun hearing of price drops for it. Let the price wars begin. I don't believe anyone would really say the 4070 is a bad card, people just want it at a lower price.
There are no bad products, only bad prices. ;) ;)
There has been no official price drop from NVIDIA.
I think you will see discounts online, or from AIBs, but this is only due to NVIDIA rebating 4070's for them.
But officially, NVIDIA has not announced any price drop, MSRP is still $599.
I don't think you'll see many below $579 anyway, and I also think it will be for a limited time, and then prices go back up. And the 6800 XT is clearly below that price point.
Thanks for the comparison. Very interesting. I wonder where the 4070 mobile falls in with these.
Probably a lower-clocked preview of the desktop 4060.
Sounds about right. In recent years we've had mobile next-tier dies literally be the same dies used in the lower-tier desktop and I seem to remember a 3060 mobile that was even the exact same die as its desktop counterpart.
The 6800xt can be back ordered for $500 now

it used to be that Nvidia fans hoped for cheap prices from AMD so that Nvidia will be forced to do a price cut.
now it is other way round. Any drop in price of 4070 will force AMD to discount 6950xt / 6800xt / 6800
Also ahead of Navi 33 8gb reveal, the 12gb 6750xt is being rebated to $310 now. I wonder what that means for price of the brand new 7600xt 8gb
