Mum’s the word over at NVIDIA regarding whatever is really going on with the supply of the GeForce RTX 5090, but according to one unnamed board partner, they’re unable to place any orders for the flagship GPU. It’s been weeks now since the RTX 5090 began vanishing from multiple outlets, and while some can still be sourced, prices range anywhere from $7,000 to over $10,000, indicating a tightening inventory chain where demand can fetch prices never before seen for a consumer graphics card. Amid all this is a rumor that NVIDIA could be refocusing its supply of GB202 dies and GDDR7 VRAM towards its RTX 6000 Pro models instead, which have also increased in price and can go for over $15,000. Now, according to an unnamed source, one board partner is not only unable to place orders for the RTX 5090 GPU and its 32GB of GDDR7 memory, but NVIDIA is not providing an option for backorders either.

Roman Hartung, once known for setting overclocking records but now more known for hardware reviews and selling PC enthusiast parts, has been looking into the missing RTX 5090 matter (via VideoCardz) and shared that a source has told him it is no longer able to place orders for kits from NVIDIA needed for manufacturing graphics cards. Hartung, aka der8auer from his overclocking days, shared a reply from the unnamed AIB partner supporting NVIDIA’s claim that is hasn’t discontinued the RTX 5090, but in an unusual twist, stating they cannot place orders at all for the kits.

“No, Nvidia did not inform us that rtx 5090 is eol, but currently we cannot purchase gb202 together with 32 gb gddr7 as complete set, and we also don’t know if ordering will be possible in the future.

…similar supply shortage situation already happened several times before, but in the past nvidia always allowed us to place backorders, which is currently not possible.”

Now the above claim seems to back up other rumors that NVIDIA might be considering the idea of no longer bundling its GPUs and memory in kits for its board partners. It also hints that significant price hikes have occurred, or are on their way, for partners who need these parts to produce their graphics cards. It’s an abysmal time for the PC market, enthusiast or otherwise, as memory and storage components continue to go up in price, thanks to manufacturers prioritizing orders for data centers and customers with deep pockets focused on AI tasks. NVIDIA is at the center of this now industrial-sized ouroboros complex, with consumers more or less thrown to the wayside, and while the RTX 5090 is under the spotlight, the lack of any real new GPUs from any major manufacturer is directly symptomatic of current conditions. These ideas have previously been discussed by Jay2Cents and Stephen Burke (Gamers Nexus) at this year’s Computex event.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
