Gaming Performance Continued – Ryzen 9 7900

We are going to focus on the 4K, 1440p, and 1080p gameplay performance. The common GPU used for every CPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition video card. Each graph has all three resolutions on each CPU included, but the order and sorting do not change in each graph. You can look at the framerate between CPUs at each resolution. Games are in order from most recent, to least recent.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  We use the built-in benchmark.

Dying Light 2 is graphically intense, but even in this graphically intense game, there are some larger differences at 1080p in performance. At 4K and 1440p performance really isn’t that different, but at 1080p the Ryzen 9 7900X is 6% faster. Enabling PBO does bring a bit more performance, but still not close to the 7900X at 1080p.

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.

Far Cry 6 is also sensitive to CPU performance, and we can see that with 1080p and 1440p have very close performance. At 4K performance is close, but a slight advantage toward the Ryzen 9 7900X. At 1440p the Ryzen 9 7900X is 5% faster and at 1080p the Ryzen 9 7900X is 4% faster. Enabling PBO does add a bit more performance.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December of 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.61 and utilize the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”.  This game supports DLSS and FSR2.

AMD Ryzen 9 7900 Cyberpunk 2077

We all know Cyberpunk 2077 is graphically demanding, and this one had a somewhat interesting result. Firstly, at 4K there wasn’t a difference in performance between the Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 9 7900 until we enabled PBO. Interestingly with PBO enabled 4K performance did improve by 4%, we also saw this at 1440p where PBO added a bit more performance over the 7900X. At 1080p the Ryzen 9 7900X is 3% faster than the Ryzen 9 7900, but again PBO brings performance up a little, but the 7900X is still the fastest.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 CPU and compared it directly versus the Ryzen 9 7900X to find out the performance differences in synthetic benchmarks and gaming performance. The Ryzen 9 7900 performed well but was quite under the 7900X in multi-core performance, but made up in single-thread or lightly threaded workloads where performance differences were small. The efficiency is excellent as a 65W CPU, and the features are top-notch. For the money, the CPU offers a lot of value and can be pushed higher with PBO, and a little tweaking. It offers a lot of possibility and options.
