Gaming Performance Continued – Ryzen 7 7700

We are going to focus on the 4K, 1440p, and 1080p gameplay performance. The common GPU used for every CPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition video card. Each graph has all three resolutions on each CPU included, but the order and sorting do not change in each graph. You can look at the framerate between CPUs at each resolution. Games are in order from most recent, to least recent.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  We use the built-in benchmark.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is graphically intense, and we see no differences at 4K or 1440p. At 1080p there is a slight difference, the Ryzen 7 7700 falls behind the Ryzen 7 7700X by a very tiny 1%. This can be considered no difference at all. Enabling PBO brings performance back at 1080p.

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700 Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is also sensitive to CPU performance, and we can see that 1080p and 1440p have very close performance with some slight differences. The Ryzen 7 7700 falls behind the Ryzen 7 7700X by 2%, again very slightly. Enabling PBO brings performance back up.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December of 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.61 and utilize the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”.  This game supports DLSS and FSR2.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700 Cyberpunk 2077

We all know Cyberpunk 2077 is graphically demanding, and this plays out at all resolutions, even 1080p. There just is no practical performance difference in gaming between the Ryzen 7 7700 and Ryzen 7 7700X.

SUMMARY

We pit the AMD Ryzen 7 7700 versus the Ryzen 7 7700X and compared performance head-to-head in synthetic, system and gaming benchmarks. We also enabled PBO overclocking to see how much performance it can claw back. The Ryzen 7 7700 performed very closely to the Ryzen 7 7700X, with a minimum performance loss, but a large efficiency improvement. It can perform near the 7700X with PBO, while still using less power, and running cooler. It offers a great value, with no gaming performance loss, and even comes with a CPU cooler making it a complete package.
