The wait is over as CD PROJEKT RED has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will finally arrive on September 26. Leaks about the release of the forthcoming DLC began surfacing at the end of last week and now everything one would want to know about it has been revealed. It will only be available for PC and current-gen consoles, not too much of a surprise here considering how poorly Cyberpunk 2077 itself ran on the base model PS4. Creative director Pawel Sasko has added in an exclusive interview with VGC that a lot of the game’s main systems have either been redone or updated.

Per VGC:

“All the core, main systems of the game have been redone or updated in a major way,” he told VGC. “The biggest ones are the perks and skill trees, which have been rebuilt completely, and the next one is we’ve added vehicle combat which enables new car chases.”

“We’ve also greatly expanded AI and completely redone the police system, which is rebuilt from the ground up and now has multiple levels with multiple archetypes of enemies who will chase you – it’s also different in Dog Town compared to Night City.”

“We’ve also redone the loop and whole progression of the game; the difficulty curve is different, the tiers and drops of loot is different, the archetypes of enemies has been redone for more variety. Those are the core things that we’ve changed, and if you look into it there are very few systems that we didn’t change or update. Even the UI and UX have been greatly updated.”

Description and Screenshots (per official page):

“Phantom Liberty is a new spy-thriller adventure for Cyberpunk 2077. Return as cyber-enhanced mercenary V and embark on a high-stakes mission of espionage and intrigue to save the NUS President. In the dangerous district of Dogtown, you must forge alliances within a web of shattered loyalties and sinister political machinations. Do you have what it takes to survive?”

Mission Briefing Screenshots:

CD PROJEKT RED has also provided even more screenshots in its mission briefing. As players explore the ruined “city-within-a-city” called Dogtown they will encounter a whole new cast of characters as well as the return of Johnny Silverhand. From spider tanks to mechs, players will have plenty to deal with in the new expansion.

New Characters:

  • Songbird: The president’s right hand. A netrunner whose special abilities make her invaluable to the NUSA.
  • Solomon Reed (voiced by Idris Elba): An experienced FIA agent specialized in covert intelligence missions with a talent for extracting information and breaking into secure places.
  • Alex: Recruited by Solomon Reed she’s an ex-brain dancer and talented shapeshifter who is now a part of the NUSA Federal Intelligence Agency.
  • Colonel Hansen: In charge of ruling Dogtown with his Barghest soldiers and a veteran of the Unification War.
  • Ash (voiced by Sasha Grey): An in-game radio DJ on 89.7 Growl FM.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
