Is The Abyss finally coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray?

It sure looks like it, as director James Cameron has taken a break from producing Avatar 3, 4, 5, and who knows what else to announce that The Abyss, his very first ocean film, has finally been remastered in 4K for viewing in modern cinemas.

There’s only one problem, though, in that the release appears to be very limited, coming only to theaters for a single day during the holiday season.

Here’s what Cameron had to say about the latest version of his movie, which has been confirmed to be the Special Edition, including what sounds like scenes that have never been seen before:

I’m excited to announce that the Special Edition of The Abyss, which we remastered in 4K, is going to be presented in theaters, this December [6].

If you haven’t seen the film before, this is the way to experience it. And if you have, you’ll be seeing the film I actually set out to make, with some big surprises not seen in the original released version.

I hope you’ll take advantage of seeing The Abyss, my first ocean film, back in theaters.

The Abyss has never seen an official release on Blu-ray, but according to remarks that Cameron made during September’s Beyond Fest film festival, a 4K physical release could be out fairly soon:

We did the transfer, all the mastering is done, I think it drops pretty soon. Like in a couple months—it’s out of my hands. There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right. And I kind of had a day job getting Avatar 2 done.

Michael Biehn, Ed Harris, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio star in the 1989 film, the end of which offers a look at underwater aliens.
