DC Output Quality

For those of you who are curious as to some of the reasoning and equipment behind our PSU testing program here at TheFPSReview, we have put together an introduction for you that shares a lot of the behind the scenes of the program. This program is based on what the author developed at [H]ardOCP and utilizes the equipment bequeathed to the author by Kyle Bennett. The testing we are conducting today is exactly as described in that document and will continue with our examination of the DC Output Quality.

Control Test Graphing

This image is the blank background control test on an unused connector from our SM-8800 during the testing of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W. This lets us determine what the background noise looks like during testing.

120v Input

100v Input

Test #1 is equal to approximately 25% of the rated capacity of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W at 45c. This makes Test #1 equal to 280W by loading the 12v rails to 21a, the 5v rail to 2a, the 3.3v rail to 1a, the +5vsb to 2a, and the -12v to 0.3a. The Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W is starting off in decent shape. All of the rails are peaking at ~10-15mV of ripple/noise.

120v Input

100v Input

Test #2 is equal to approximately 50% of the rated capacity of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W at 45c. This makes Test #2 equal to 504W by loading the 12v rails to 39a, the 5v rail to 3a, the 3.3v rail to 2a, the +5vsb to 2a, and the -12v to 0.3a. Test #2 sees no real changes as all rails are coming in at ~10-15mV of ripple/noise.

120v Input

100v Input

Test #3 is equal to approximately 75% of the rated capacity of Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W at 45c. This makes Test #3 equal to 762W by loading the 12v rails to 59a, the 5v rail to 6a, the 3.3v rail to 4a, the +5vsb to 2a, and the -12v to 0.3a. Test #3 sees the 12v rail coming in at ~15mV of ripple/noise while the minor rails are coming in at ~20mV of ripple/noise.

120v Input

100v Input

Test #4 is equal to approximately 100% of the rated capacity of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W at 45c. This makes Test #4 equal to 1018W by loading the 12v rails to 81a, the 5v rail to 4a, the 3.3v rail to 2a, the +5vsb to 2a, and the -12v to 0.3a. In the final regular test, we see the 12v rail peaking at ~60mV of ripple/noise while the minor rails are peaking at ~15mV of ripple/noise.

Torture Test

The Torture Test is equal to approximately 80% of the rated capacity of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W at 45C. This makes the Torture Test equal to 825W by loading the 12v rails to 63a, the 5v rail to 7a, the 3.3v rail to 5a, the +5vsb to 2a, and the -12v to 0.3a. At the end of the Torture Test, we see the 12v rail peaking at ~25mV of ripple/noise while the 5v rail is hitting ~30mV and 3.3v rail is peaking at ~15mV of ripple/noise.

DC Output Quality Summary

The overall DC Output Quality of the Enermax REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W is in the specification. While the ripple/noise values started the day off in good shape things were very dynamic towards the end. Overall, the REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W ended up posting a peak trace amplitude on the 12v rail of ~60mV followed by ~30mV on the 5v rail and ~20mV on the 3.3v rail. None of these values exit the ATX12v specification limits, or even approach those limits, as the worst relative value only hit ~60% of the ATX12v specification limit. Wait, what? Did I just say ~60% of the limit? Ok, I get it. That is not outside of the limits but we rarely see units hit ~60% of the limits these days.

Overall then, this unit did pass but it is not exactly doing great in this segment which is another caveat. The fact that it is rated at 1050W makes this unit such that we can not honestly compare it to 1000W units or 1200W units since they have different rated outputs. If we did though, this unit would not exactly stand up favorably. But, in scientific honesty, we can not say how it would do against other 1050W units. This is kind of a head-scratcher. Let’s move on now and see how all of this wraps up!

SUMMARY

The Enermax REVOLUTION D. F. X 1050W is the latest and greatest power supply we have seen from Enermax here at The FPS Review. With the REVOLUTION D. F. X 1050W we see a whole lot right and very little wrong today. The voltage regulation is very good, the noise profile is excellent, the build quality looks high quality, and the efficiency is about what we would expect. Like all revolutions though, not everything was perfect. The DC Output Quality was passing but not exactly stunning. That said, there was one other thing to consider. With the REVOLUTION D.F. X 1050W today not only could you buy your freedom through a revolution, but you do so at bargain price. And while you can’t put a price on freedom, saving money is always nice.
