Bethesda has announced that its free next-gen update for Fallout 4 won’t be released this year as originally planned, but PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC players should expect to see it sometime in the coming year.

“Thank you for your patience with us as we work on the Fallout 4 next-gen update,” reads a tweet that the official Fallout account shared this morning. “We know you’re excited, and so are we! But we need a bit more time and look forward to an exciting return to the Commonwealth in 2024.”

According to Bethesda’s original announcement, which was made in October 2022 as part of the Fallout franchise’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the new update is supposed to improve the performance and visuals of Fallout 4 for console players, as well as introduce bug fixes for all platforms:

Prepare for the future: A next-gen update is coming to Fallout 4! Coming in 2023, this free update will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC systems, including performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content!

“For the love of God, make it so Paid Creations don’t disable Achievements,” wrote one critic.

“Does it really take 2 years to release an fps and resolution boost?” said another.

It’s unclear when Fallout 4’s next-gen update might be released, exactly, but for now, Fallout fans can check out Fallout 76: Atlantic City – Boardwalk Paradise, an all-new expedition that launched for the post-apocalyptic multiplayer online RPG on December 5.

Here’s a description for Fallout 76: Atlantic City – Boardwalk Paradise from Bethesda, which is available as a free update to all players:

Deemed a “low priority target” when the Great War broke out, Atlantic City is now a premier destination of the wasteland, offering thrilling entertainment, scenic coastal views and even running electricity! Players can now venture out to Atlantic City to complete two new Expedition missions that will get them properly acquainted with the local populace.

Encourage some unsavory business with The Family, Atlantic City’s resident mob, while they try stay off the radar of the Municipal Government keeping the lights on (both literally and figuratively.) Meanwhile, the guild running the city’s entertainment known as The Showmen have a daring gauntlet with glory and riches awaiting those brave (or possibly foolish) enough to enter!

You’ll want to pack more than a spare change of clothes for your trip to Atlantic City, however. Beyond the New Jersey Pine Barrens lie the mutated Overgrown – irradiated, plant-like beasts from deep within the woods encroaching on Atlantic City’s borders. Also keep an eye out for some ferocious lil’ devils spotted in the area – Appalachia isn’t the only place with cryptid spottings, y’know.

Fallout 4 is $19.99 on Steam.
