Activision is currently developing a new Call of Duty game for 2025, and while that’s of little surprise, Insider Gaming has learned that the game will supposedly be a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops II, an installment of the franchise from Treyarch launched in November 2012.

Here’s what Insider Gaming’s sources had to share about the game, which is reportedly set in the near future (around 2030) and will bring back some of the maps from the original:

…fans should expect the return of some fan-favorite protagonists as the team faces a new villain following the death of Menendez.

…the intention was to have all of the Black Ops 2 remastered maps released on launch, similar to how Modern Warfare 2’s (2009) maps came back in Modern Warfare 3. However, the current plan now is to launch with new maps and remastered maps in conjunction. Although only one source would comment on the change, it was speculated that the game was likely in response to widespread fan criticism that painted Modern Warfare 3 as a glorified DLC to its 2022 predecessor.

Call of Duty 2025 is “also slated to have an overhaul to its movement system, the return of a classic ‘pick 10’ create-a-class, the gunfight game mode, and another year of round-based zombies,” Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson added.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is over 10 years old, but the PC version is still being sold for $59.99 on Steam and other retailers.

“Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops II propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare,” reads a description for the game.
