NVIDIA’s launched its RTX Video HDR technology last month to enhance SDR videos, but it also includes support for converting select games from SDR to HDR, according to NvTrueHDR, a new mod that is now available for download on NexusMods. The mod, which serves as an alternative to Windows Auto HDR, is said to work with most DirectX games, and, possibly, even some OpenGL/Vulkan titles.

NvTrueHDR mod supports:

  • Most DX9/DX10/DX11/DX12 games
  • May also have some support for OpenGL/Vulkan

NvTrueHDR mod instructions:

  • First enable HDR on all connected displays, and disable Windows AutoHDR.
  • Extract the ZIP somewhere and run the NvTrueHDR.exe file.
  • Enter the name of the game EXE when prompted, you will then be asked whether to enable it/disable it/enable on-screen HUD, make your choice and then press enter.
    • (If the tool can’t find the game profile, try adding it in NV Control Panel’s “Manage 3D Settings” page & apply settings after adding it, then try using the full path to the game EXE)
    • Recommend picking the “HUD” option first to make it draw an on-screen indicator on top-left, letting you know if it’s active, once you know it works you can then re-enable it without the indicator (certain games may enable RTXHDR without drawing the indicator however – YMMV)
  • The tool should let you know whether the settings were saved successfully, now launch the game and hopefully it should then take effect.

NVIDIA on RTX Video HDR:

HDR mode enables stunning video quality but is not widely used online because of the extra work required. Using the power of Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX GPUs, RTX Video HDR allows GeForce RTX GPU owners to maximize their HDR panel’s ability to display more vivid, dynamic colors, preserving intricate details that may be inadvertently rendered unidentifiable due to video compression.
