Unknown Worlds has clarified that Subnautica 3, the latest installment of its underwater action-adventure series, will not be leveraging the controversial games-as-a-service (GaaS) model—something that Krafton, its parent company, apparently claimed in its (now revised) earnings release deck for 4Q23 and FY2023. The developer suggested that this was merely a miscommunication, and what was meant was that Subnautica 3 would simply be updated for years to come.

Unknown Worlds noted:

  • Early Access is not intended for release in 2024, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year!
  • In reference to “Games-as-a-Service,” we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.
  • The game is not multiplayer-focused. Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player.

Krafton’s original/current bullet points:

  • …multiplayer sequel to the original IP pursuing fandom snowballing
  • …explore an oceanic world in…stunning stylized graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5
  • …single or one to four player co-op to uncover the mysteries on an entirely new alien planet
  • …game-as-a-service model with enhanced replayability

Current Subnautica titles include:

Subnautica: Below Zero description:

Dive into a freezing underwater adventure on an alien planet. Below Zero is set two years after the original Subnautica. Return to Planet 4546B to uncover the truth behind a deadly cover-up. Survive by building habitats, crafting tools, & diving deeper into the world of Subnautica.
