Sega has confirmed that it’s working on a new installment of Crazy Taxi, and not only that, it’s being approached as a premium, triple-A game, according to Takaya Segawa, Sega’s senior executive officer. Segawa, who also serves as the president of Sega’s Sapporo Studio, shared the news with The Japan Times last week as part of an article about how his studio, which was formed in December 2021 amid a “pandemic-fueled gaming craze,” continues to attract talent for new projects that include the Crazy Taxi reboot and more.

Segawa mentioned:

  • “[Sapporo Studio] is responsible for titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! in cooperation with the bases in Tokyo and overseas.”
  • “We are also participating in the development of Triple-A titles, including Crazy Taxi.”
  • “At present, we don’t have any titles developed independently by the studio, but we intend to do so in the future.”

Sega’s Crazy Taxi teaser from last year:

This driving game series first appeared in arcades in 1999. It has since spawned numerous titles and been ported to the Dreamcast and a variety of other consoles. Players would assume the role of a taxi driver and have to race through the city to deliver passengers to their destinations, all while performing crazy stunts to earn more points. The series offered players an exhilarating and dynamic driving experience that was distinct from traditional racing games at the time.

Crazy Taxi releases include:

  • Crazy Taxi (1999)
  • Crazy Taxi 2 (2001)
  • Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller (2002)
  • Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride (2003)
  • Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars (2007)
  • Crazy Taxi: City Rush (2014)
  • Crazy Taxi Gazillionaire/Tycoon/Idle Tycoon (2017)
