Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for Borderlands, and complementing the 4K footage for Eli Roth’s latest film is a breakdown from Gearbox Software founder himself, Randy Pitchford. Pitchford, who recently revealed that he signed off on developing an adaptation of his looter shooter after bonding with producer Ari Arad over a game of League of Legends, not only points out all of the Easter eggs and game references in the trailer, but suggests that more films are on the way, having mentioned a “Borderlands Cinematic Universe.”

The 4K trailer:

Pitchford said:

  • “One of the cool things about the movie is we’ve created a cinematic universe that lives side by side with the video game universe. And of course, the characters are there and authentic in the themes and even some of the storylines. But they’re independent storylines.”
  • “So this isn’t Borderlands 1. This isn’t Borderlands 2. The Borderlands movie is the first of the Borderlands Cinematic Universe and you’ll see some characters from some of the different parts of what you might know from the video games. But it also gives us an opportunity to get deeper and expand a little bit. You never met the CEO of the Atlas Corporation and you will meet that character for the first time in the Borderlands movie and his name is Deukalian Atlas.”
  • “We deal with some serious stuff and there’s real human emotions and it’s a story about the family you make instead of the family you’re born with, and dealing with loyalty and allegiances and real stuff. There’s real stuff in here. But it’s also a comedy. We like to laugh and we like to have fun and we like it when the people that enjoy the entertainment we have to offer are having a fun time. So prepare to laugh. We got the gags.”

Trailer breakdown with Randy Pitchford:

Synopsis:

Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.
