Dead Island 2 has arrived on Xbox Game Pass for players who don’t want to fully commit to the $59.99 MSRP of Dambuster Studios’ Zombie-infested action RPG, the PC version of which originally launched exclusively on the Epic Games Store in April 2023, publisher Deep Silver has announced. There appears to be a caveat, however: a blog post on the Dead Island 2 site notes that the Game Pass version of the game is only available through the Ultimate tier of Microsoft’s subscription service, which costs $16.99/mo.

Deep Silver on what players can expect from the Game Pass version:

…you’ll have unlimited access to the base game on Xbox, including co-op functionality. So, there’s no need to go it alone – gather your squad and take on the horde together in thrilling co-op action!

New rewards for members of PROS (Prism Ray Online Services), an account system supported by Dead Island 2 other games:

  • “Score yourself a slick Trickster’s Smile knife for that extra edge in battle. And hey, if you’re feeling brave, take on the challenge of dismembering 1000 limbs to claim the legendary Malibu Nightstick bat. It’s time to unleash your inner zombie-slaying hero.”
  • “From February 15th through March 14th, we’re enabling the Drops category wide on Twitch. This means anyone streaming Dead Island 2 on Twitch will have Drops enabled. By tuning in to participating channels on Twitch for as little as 20 minutes, you can claim exclusive loot – From Dusk Dani and the FOMOrian Claws – for free.”

A synopsis, plus a word on the game’s dismemberment system:

The city’s in quarantine – thanks to a deadly virus – and it’s down to the somehow immune slayers to embark on an epic pulp journey across a plethora of well-known locations such as Beverly Hills, Venice Beach and Santa Monica to uncover the truth behind the outbreak and who or what they are turned into, meeting a crazy cast of characters in the process. Thanks to Dambuster’s F.L.E.S.H. (Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids) system – which makes dismemberment gloriously gory – killing zombies has never been so spectacular.
