Pentiment, one of the four “fan-favorite Xbox games” that Microsoft announced last week for Nintendo Switch and Sony platforms, is getting an update that will boost the performance of Obsidian’s 2022 adventure RPG beyond 60 FPS on Xbox Series X consoles. Josh Sawyer, who directed the game, announced the news on X yesterday after players began pointing out how the PS5 version, which launched on February 22, runs at 120 FPS.

Sawyer’s tweet, where the problem is described as a “bug”:

Xbox Series X and PS5 versions compared:

Pentiment is now available on:

  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Windows PCs
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch

Game description:

Step into a living illustrated world inspired by illuminated manuscripts and printed woodcuts in a time when Europe is at a crossroads of great religious and political change. Walk in the footsteps of Andreas Maler, a master artist who finds himself in the middle of murders, scandals, and intrigue in the Bavarian Alps.

Players are saying:

  • “If you have any interest in history, this game is an absolute gem – incredibly immersive experience with amazing art direction.”
  • “When I finished Disco Elysium in 2019, I said ‘I have no idea how I’m supposed to play another role playing game after this one. I want more.’ … Pentiment is more.”
  • “The end credits show they had a five person team working on the typography, and lists ~30 peer published books and papers on medieval life.”
  • “One of the first major conversations asks you to decide what your stance on Martin Luther’s 95 Theses is. The first side quest has you debate the theological implications of the destruction of books with a nun. 10/10.”
  • “Joshua Sawyer has spoken on his tumblr about how New Vegas ‘was the peak of [his] career in terms of being high-profile and commercially successful.’ I believe that Pentiment is the peak of his career artistically.”
