The Tesla Roadster, an all-electric sports car that Tesla has been teasing since 2014, will feature an acceleration time of 0–60 MPH in under a second, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk, who is in second place on Forbes’ real-time billionaires list with $209.6 billion at the time of this writing, shared the news on X/Twitter yesterday, revealing that the vehicle is being developed in collaboration with SpaceX, his spacecraft company, and how it will be truly one-of-a-kind.

Musk said:

  • “…we radically increased the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster.”
  • “There will never be another car like this, if you could even call it a car.”
  • “Tesla/SpaceX collab…Production design complete and unveil end of year, aiming to ship next year”
  • “0-60mph < 1 sec…and that is the least interesting part”

Reservations for the new Roadster remain open:

  • Due within 10 days: $45,000
  • Due at sign-up: $5,000

What the current Roadster offers/can deliver, per Tesla.com:

  • 0-60 MPH: 1.9 seconds
  • Top speed: +250 MPH
  • Range: 620 miles
  • Seating for four
  • Lightweight Glass Roof
  • Roof can be removed and stored in the trunk

Tesla’s announcement videos from six years ago:

Tesla on the Roadster Sport, a derivative of the original Roadster that was introduced in 2010:

The Roadster Sport does 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, compared with 3.9 seconds for the standard Roadster. It comes with a hand-wound stator and increased winding density for lower resistance and higher peak torque. In addition to Yokohama’s Ultra High Performance tires, the Roadster Sport has improved suspension with adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars that will be tuned to the driver’s preference.
