Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Project will comprise a trilogy of games, and while it’s unclear when the third title might be released, it, similar to FFVII REMAKE and the recently released FFVII REBIRTH, won’t be available to play on any platform aside from the PlayStation at launch. That’s according to Christian Svensson, VP of second- and third-party content ventures and strategic initiatives at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who told The Washington Post as part of a new feature about the importance of console exclusivity how PlayStation has successfully secured “the Final Fantasy VII trilogy” as a console exclusive.

Svensson mentioned:

  • “Securing the ‘Final Fantasy VII’ trilogy as a console exclusive is a feather in the PlayStation cap.”
  • “It’s part of recognizing the original game’s importance as a defining game for the PlayStation experience.”
  • “Back in that same console generation for the original PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment had few franchises of its own…in order to find its place in a very competitive video game industry, we sought to win the hearts and minds of key third-party developers like Square…”
  • “[That focus on third-party partnerships] is ingrained in our DNA to this day…and connects directly to how we’ve worked together on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.”

Square Enix on FFVII REBIRTH, which launched exclusively for PS5 on February 29:

In FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, players take on the role of mercenary Cloud Strife and his comrades as they pursue legendary swordsman Sephiroth, a haunting figure from Cloud’s past bent on ruling the planet, across a vast and vibrant world rife with danger, adventure, joy and uncertainty. These unlikely heroes, including beloved, iconic characters Tifa, Barret, Aerith and Red XIII, join forces with new companions like the spirited ninja operative Yuffie and the wisecracking, feline-shaped robot Cait Sith. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH delivers an unforgettable experience to players filled with unexpected twists, memorable characters and jaw-dropping set pieces that longtime fans and newcomers can both enjoy.
