Sega has cut approximately 240 jobs in Europe as part of a plan for “optimizing fixed expenses,” Sega Sammy announced today in a notice regarding implementation of structural reform in the European region and recording of losses. Relic Entertainment, the developer behind the Companies of Heroes series of RTS games, has also been sold off by Sega, making it an independently run studio again.
Relic Entertainment’s recent games include:
- Company of Heroes 3 (2023)
- Age of Empires IV (2021)
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III (2017)

Jurgen Post, head of Sega Europe, explained:
- “Sega is working closely with Relic on this shift, and we wish them the best for the future. I want to sincerely apologise for the worry and understandable distress this news will cause, particularly for those directly affected.”
- “These decisions have been incredibly tough to make, and they follow meticulous consideration and deliberation with leadership teams across the business. Change is necessary to secure the future of our games business, and to ensure that we are well placed to deliver the best possible experiences to our players going forward.”
- “We need to streamline, focus on what we are good at, and position ourselves as best we can for the road ahead. In order to do that, we need to respond to the changing economic landscape and the challenges we’re facing in the way we develop our products and bring them to market.”
Relic on what to expect from the change:
… Mostly, it’s business as usual. Throughout this transition for Relic, we remain committed to supporting Company of Heroes 3, and our team will share more news as we firm up our 2024 plans. We’re excited about everything coming for you in our next update, Coral Viper, and we look forward to your feedback once you’ve had a chance to dive in.
