Dr. Lisa Su, chair and chief executive officer of AMD, earned nearly double what Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger did in 2023, according to new reports that discuss how Su, who has been described as one of America’s richest self-made women, made $30.35 million last year. Su is largely credited with having saved AMD, having joined back in 2014 to steer the ship when the company was “deader than dead.”

2023 CEO earnings:

  • Dr. Lisa Su (AMD): $30.35 million
  • Pat Gelsinger (Intel): $16.86 million

The specifics from MarketWatch:

  • “Su’s salary last year was $1.2 million, and she had $21.85 million in stock awards, $5.84 million in option awards, $1.43 million in non-equity incentive plan compensation and $28,711 in all other compensation.”
  • “Su’s all other compensation included contributions of $14,850 to her 401(k), $2.412 in life-insurance premiums paid, and ‘other’ compensation of $11,449, which was the cost of ‘spousal travel on company aircraft’ for business trips.”
  • “…Gelsinger had total compensation of $16.86 million in 2023, or 45% more than his total 2022 compensation of $11.61 million.”
  • “…Gelsinger’s 2023 salary fell 18% to $1.07 million, from $1.3 million in 2022, but the value of the stock awards he received increased to $12.43 million from $8.87 million, while his non-equity incentive plan compensation, which includes cash performance bonuses, jumped to $2.89 million from $945,900.”

That said:

…after he returned to Intel as CEO on Feb. 15, [Gelsinger] reaped total compensation of $178.59 million. That included “new-hire equity awards of a significant magnitude” — $140.43 million to be exact — so the company could hire “the best leader possible.”

Su’s credentials and accolades include:

…master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She has published more than 40 technical articles and was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers in 2009. In 2018, Dr. Su was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and received the Global Semiconductor Association’s Dr. Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award. In 2020, Fortune named Dr. Su #2 on its “Business Person of the Year” list, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Science, and received the Grace Hopper Technical Leadership Abie Award. In 2021, she was recognized by the IEEE with its highest semiconductor honor, the Robert N. Noyce Medal, and was appointed by President Biden to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Dr. Su also serves on the board of directors for the Semiconductor Industry Association.
