Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, the sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, will only run at 30 FPS on Xbox Series X|S consoles, according to a German outlet that recently visited developer Ninja Theory’s studio in Cambridge and was able to learn new details about the Unreal Engine 5 game. The console version of Hellblade II is also said to lack graphics modes, which means that players who want to adjust the frame rate will need to step up to the PC version.

Release date and platforms:

  • Tuesday, May 21
  • Xbox, PC, and Game Pass

GamePro mentioned:

  • “…Hellblade 2 only runs at 30 fps and dynamic resolution on both Xbox Series S and Series X.”
  • “There are no graphics modes; the frame rate can only be increased on the PC.”
  • “The VFX director explains…that the experience should feel more ‘cinematic’ – similar to movies that run at 24 frames per second.”
  • “Since the gameplay is generally rather slow and weighty, the smooth 30 fps didn’t bother me during the playback session…”

An official trailer that was shared during TGA 2023:

Microsoft on some of the realism present in the game:

One chapter had us take Senua through a camp in order to rescue a new character, a task she feels deep conflict over. Her voices are pulling her in different directions, and you can see and feel Senua overcome her fears and anguish in real time as she moves through this space. There’s a hesitancy in every step she takes, a flinch at every noise, you’re not just walking her through a pre-determined path; she’s physically responding to the environment in real-time, and it feels incredible.

Game description:

The sequel to the award winning Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Senua returns in a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland. Intent on saving those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny, Senua faces a battle of overcoming the darkness within and without. Sink deep into the next chapter of Senua’s story, a crafted experience told through cinematic immersion, beautifully realised visuals and encapsulating sound.
