Ubisoft is reportedly in the process of overhauling its Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake to the point that the game is essentially being remade. According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the troubled project has taken some drastic turns. Henderson was able to obtain footage of the game and has said that it looks to be in the early stages still, a “ways off from release”, but adds more details about the project’s current state provided via his source.

Per Insider Gaming:

“Everything has been built from the ground up, which includes a complete graphical overhaul, new animations and mechanics for combat and parkour, and much more. Starting from scratch has meant that the game has been rewritten, recaptured in mocap, and more.”

A rocky road through the sands of time

  • 2020 – Ubisoft first announced its Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake back in 2020 following rumors of its development surfacing online.
  • 2021 – A year later the project was put on hold indefinitely after an outpouring from fans who expressed dissatisfaction with the game’s original announcement trailer, which at the time of this publication, is no longer on the game’s main webpage.
  • 2022 – Come 2022, Ubisoft posted another update suggesting it could be released that year but that too did not happen.
  • 2022 – Not long after that it was revealed a change of development teams had happened with the project moving from Ubisoft Pune/Ubisoft Mumbai and over to original series creator Ubisoft Montreal.
  • 2022 – This, of course, led to another delay announcement along with further assurance that the game was still in development and not canceled.
  • 2023 – Producer Jean-Francois Naud and Game Director Michael McIntyre update in a Q&A that the game is still in development.

In addition to all of these details that Ubisoft is reportedly, essentially remaking its own remake from the ground up comes something else unexpected, original series voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, who had been the voice in the announcement trailer, is no longer involved. Henderson was not able to provide more details on this but he did reach out to Ubisoft for comment on his findings and was told by a Ubisoft spokesperson that, “We do not comment on rumours and speculation”.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
