Showrunners Mike McMahan and Alex Kurtzman have announced that the fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will be its last. The final season is set to begin streaming on Paramount+ sometime this fall. McMahan and Kurtzman updated on the show’s status Friday thanking fans and crew for all the support the series has received. They also added that, unlike some content that manages to disappear from streaming services, all episodes of the show will remain on Paramount+.

The future of U.S.S. Cerritos Crew

The showrunners do manage to tease fans hoping to see more of the crew in by ending their announcement with “We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” but for now, only they may know what’s in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Star Trek: Lower Decks has already delivered a nearly uncountable amount of fan service with its writing team showing off a great depth of knowledge with the entirety of the Star Trek universe. Its writers have packed tidbits and factoids into jokes and one-liners throughout every episode to such a degree that even the most stout-hearted fan is left to think about and remember with a smile.

While Star Trek: Lower Decks enjoyed its own share of crossover stories which included characters from TNG, Discover, and Voyager, it also made sure to constantly mention events and characters of TOS. In turn, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds did its own TOS, cleverly redefined as Those Old Scientists, an episode featuring live-action performances by the voice actors for Biomler and Mariner. That episode was so well received that it’s entirely possible more crossovers could be in the works hence the showrunner’s suggestion there could still be more in store for the crew. On that note, it was also announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, whose third season is still in production, has already been renewed for a fourth season.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
