Netflix hasn’t confirmed whether it’s open to financing another Rebel Moon film yet, but if that comes to pass, director Zack Snyder is ready, according to a new interview with the director, one in which he shares new insight about his latest film universe, including its upcoming director’s cuts and what could potentially be a part three. Details for the third installment come as critics deem the Rebel Moon films to be Snyder’s worst work to date, with Part Two hitting 21% on the Tomatometer.

The critical reception so far:

  • Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire
    • Tomatometer: 21%
    • Audience Score: 58%
  • Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver
    • Tomatometer: 16%
    • Audience Score: 54%

Snyder on what Part Three would be about:

  • “The story of movie three would be tracking [Princess Issa] down and finding out how [the rebels] can use the victory at Veldt to create a coalition of planets that were on the edge of rebellion, but have now seen the example of downing a dreadnought.”
  • “I’m…excited for everyone to get to go on this alternative reality director’s cut journey, which is my catharsis. But … it’ll be fun to see where we go after that.”
  • “As [Netflix does] their reshuffling, I’m just not sure what they intend. We 100 percent know where the movies go and everything, and I’m excited for everyone to check out Part Two.”

An official trailer for Part Two:

Top critics are saying:

  • “Put ‘Part One’ and ‘Part Two’ together, and it’s clear that Rebel Moon is a four-hour movie that could have been told in two hours. It’s not really ‘epic’ — it’s just stretched-out.”
  • “The Scargiver feels like a loosely threaded series of grand ideas and sincere emotional beats that require so much more connective tissue to thread together into an actual narrative worth investing in.”
  • “Somehow, Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver is even worse than the first one. It’s even more structurally-suspect, even more perfunctory in how it deals with its characters. It also looks considerably worse, and the first movie was no grand vision.”
  • “We have already said it but it must be repeated: Snyder uses and abuses slow motion.”

The official synopsis:

REBEL MOON — PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER continues the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld. On the eve of their battle the warriors must face the truths of their own pasts, each revealing why they fight. As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made.
