Fallout 4’s next-gen update is now available on PC, but players may want to avoid it, or, at least, temper their expectations, according to a flood of complaints on forums and social media that detail many of its apparent problems, including what is said to be broken mods, messed up sound, stretched UI elements in widescreen mode, and much, much more. The Fallout 4 Script Extender, a tool that requires little introduction for anyone who has tried modding the game, is officially broken but will receive an update at a later date, authors Ian Patterson, Stephen Abel, and Brendan Borthwick have confirmed.

Fallout 4 next-gen update problems are said to include:

  • Breaks mods on all platforms, including consoles
  • Modded saves no longer loading
  • Stretched user interface in widescreen modes
  • No ray tracing or other graphical updates
  • Creation engine still taps out at 60 FPS
  • Bug where weapon debris graphics setting causes the game to crash on GeForce RTX cards still remains
  • Overlapping voices and other “messed up” sounds

A look at what some players are seeing under widescreen modes:

Bethesda on its new update, including a note about how it isn’t free for PS Plus owners:

This free update includes native applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes. Experience up to 60 FPS and increased resolutions! For Japanese and Chinese language players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Bethesda.net login issues have been resolved, fixing access to mods.

Fallout 4 players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also receive a free update with stability improvements, login and quest fixes. To download the update on a next-generation console, you must own Fallout 4 for that device.
