The PlayStation 5, Sony’s latest video games console, is no being sold under the pretense that it is powerful enough to deliver up to 8K UHD (7680 × 4320) experiences, according to photos shared online that show how the 8K badge on PS5 packaging is no longer present, with only the 4K 120 and HDR logos remaining. Some PlayStation fans have argued that these images were faked, but Sony’s official PlayStation Store, which includes official packaging shots that reflect the change, suggests otherwise.

Critics are saying:

  • “‘We didn’t say for games’ lol”
  • “they prob thought 8K tvs mighta taken off for media at least, even if not for gaming.”
  • “They should remove the 4k120 as well and replace it with the ‘4k30’.”
  • “It’s crazy because it seems most console games average around 1440p which is a small fraction of 8K resolution.”
  • “It can still open 8k photos though!”
