Street Fighter, a new film based the popular fighting game franchise from Capcom that is being co-developed and produced by the Japanese video game company, will be released on March 20, 2026, Sony and Legendary Pictures have announced. The date arrives just a week after Capcom shared an update about the original 1994 Street Fighter film, telling shareholders during a meeting last Thursday about how the film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, is still making a decent amount of money for the developer and publisher.
From a report:
- “Legendary nabbed the film and television rights to the highly popular gaming series in 2023.”
- “Any upcoming projects — including one feature film that’s already in the works — will be co-developed and produced in conjunction with Japanese video game distributor Capcom.”
- “Hollywood has yet to master a live-screen version of ‘Street Fighter,’ though there have been several attempts.”
- “Universal’s 1994 action film ‘Street Fighter’ — starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia — was a critical and commercial misfire, as was 20th Century Fox’s 2009 adaptation ‘Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li’ with Kristin Kreuk.”
