Cities: Skylines II, the 2023 city-building game from developer Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive that invites players to raise a city from the ground up and transform it into a thriving metropolis in what’s been described as the most realistic city builder ever, may not be coming to consoles any time soon, according to a new update from Colossal that explains how it has been unable to meet the stability and performance targets that it had set for the console version of the game. The PC version, which launched in October 2023, remains available for purchase in two editions, including an Ultimate Edition that grants access to the Base Game, the Waterfronts Expansion Pass, and an additional three Creator Packs and three Radio Stations.

Colossal writes:

  • “Unfortunately, we have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release. Without a Release Candidate (RC), we are now unable to meet an October release window.”
  • “While we are making slow but steady progress, there are still unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience we want to deliver. We expect to receive a new RC, which will undergo a thorough review in August.”
  • “This evaluation will determine whether we can begin the submission process and provide a solid release date, or if further issues need to be addressed.”
  • “We understand this is disappointing, and it’s not what we had hoped for either. However, we are committed to keeping you informed throughout this development process, even if the updates aren’t always what we’d like.”

An accolades trailer:

Game description:

The most realistic and detailed city builder ever, Cities: Skylines II pushes your creativity and problem-solving to another level. With beautifully rendered high-resolution graphics, it also inspires you to build the city of your dreams.

Lay the foundations for your city to begin. Create the roads, infrastructure, and systems that make life possible day to day. It’s up to you – all of it.

How your city grows is your call too, but plan strategically. Every decision has an impact. Can you energize local industries while also using trade to boost the economy? What will make residential districts flourish without killing the buzz downtown? How will you meet the needs and desires of citizens while balancing the city’s budget?

Your city never rests. Like any living, breathing world, it changes over time. Some changes will be slow and gradual, while others will be sudden and unexpected. So while seasons turn and night follows day, be ready to act when life doesn’t go to plan.
