Starfield: Shattered Space, a new expansion for Bethesda’s space-faring sci-fi RPG that will take players to the home planet of House Va’ruun and unlock some of the mysteries behind one of the game’s major factions, has been designed to be a scary experience, one that features an atmosphere reminiscent of horror games that include F.E.A.R., the psychological first-person shooter franchise that Monolith Productions introduced with the series’ original title in 2005, according to early previews for the expansion that surfaced this week. F.E.A.R. 3, the most recent mainline installment of the series, was developed by Day 1 Studios and released for PS3, Windows PCs, and Xbox 360 in 2011.

One roundup for Shattered Space reads:

  • “Horror-driven.”
  • “Combat-intensive.”
  • “You can leave the planet any time you wish, but the plot is entirely self-contained, and exploration of the planet and the city will lead to uncovering exactly what happened.”
  • “Shattered Space’ planet has more of an alien world feel.”
  • “Abandoned sci-fi corridors, plagued by grim beasts.”
  • “FEAR-like atmosphere.”
  • “A handcrafted world, new weapons, new gear, new items.”

Bethesda on Shattered Space:

This clandestine faction is primarily known only by their dangerous reputation and violent history. When a distress signal originating from a derelict star station leads you on a path to Va’ruun’kai, you’ll begin to uncover the secrets surrounding the followers of the Great Serpent and ultimately decide the future of House Va’ruun.

Shattered Space is the first story expansion for Starfield. Explore a brand new, completely handcrafted location and experience the story of House Va’ruun when Shattered Space launches on September 30. The Great Serpent awaits.
