An Avowed developer has said that the team at Obsidian Entertainment decided early on to aim for a lower frame rate on Xbox. Art director Matt Hansen said during an exclusive Iron Lords Gamescom podcast that 30 FPS is the bare minimum but that players don’t necessarily need 60 FPS due to the game being a first-person RPG. Hansen further explained that (per VGC), “It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames. And that allows us to get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting and all this other stuff.”

“It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal.”

Avowed had seemingly been planned for release this coming fall but that release date was pulled not long after being posted on social media but a new date has now been announced. Xbox said that it will now launch in 2025 to give players a chance to pace their way through their gaming backlogs. Another Avowed developer, Director Carrie Patel, has also said the game will have more than ten different endings and feature a similar gameplay length to that of another popular Obsidian game, The Outer Worlds.

Game Features (via Xbox)

  • “The Living Lands is a place that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you as it feels the island itself is calling out to you for help. Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem.”
  • “Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way. Dig into your grimoire for spells to trap, freeze or burn enemies, bash them with your shield, or use range bows to attack from a distance.”
  • “Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities. From a former mercenary to an eccentric wizard, they will be part of your journey with your choices shaping them as you help them with their quests.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
