Quake II PSX, a new mod that delivers what is said to be the entire Quake II PSX campaign for those on PC, complemented by additional content that include high-res models for two PSX-specific monsters, balance changes, all deathmatch maps, and bot support, is now available for download on moddb.com, creator Paril has announced. The mod comes almost exactly 25 years after the release of Quake II for PlayStation, which developer HammerHead launched in October 1999 with 512×240 resolution and 30 FPS graphics. A trailer that shows off some of the mod’s levels and features can be found below.

Quake II PSX had much less intelligent AI, several bugs that greatly affected gameplay (such as difficulties being assigned wrong for certain levels, causing more monsters to spawn on Easy instead of Hard), and many limitations compared to the PC version. We took the time to set this right! The monsters use the new, smarter AI of the re-release to its fullest extent, making the game less about fighting against the dated digital control scheme of the original and more about fighting the Strogg.
