The Nintendo Switch 2 launch is off to a great start and has already broken all-time sales records for the console manufacturer. To say that anticipation for the long-awaited follow-up hybrid gaming system was high would be an understatement, as it’s been reported that it has sold over 3.5 million units in just four days. Nintendo has said this achievement makes the new console the fastest-selling hardware ever worldwide. Ironically, despite the launch of its RTX 50 series GPUs, this might also qualify as NVIDIA’s biggest hardware launch of 2025 as well.

“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” said Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser in a statement (via Reuters) regarding the recent launch.

Ironically, despite the launch of its RTX 50 series GPUs, this might also qualify as NVIDIA’s biggest consumer hardware launch of 2025 as well. This tongue-in-cheek joke (per VideoCardz) might be closer to the truth than not, given the often limited availability of Team Green’s GPUs at launch, and for months afterwards. The success of the Nintendo Switch 2 can be considered a success for both hardware manufacturers, as it uses a custom NVIDIA processor, continuing a path started with the first Switch.

While it sold out in some places on its launch day, there are many posts on social media from folks who’ve stated they were able to walk into their favorite store to grab one off the shelf without hassle, an experience which has been a bit of a rarity with popular hardware releases in recent years. Nintendo had repeatedly stated it had strategically worked on its release to date to ensure supply chains could meet demands on launch day, and it would appear their efforts were not in vain. It was reported that Nintendo sent “out of stock” signs to vendors, knowing that despite this, supplies would still not meet the incredible demand for the new console. Meanwhile, folks are already scouring to gather other previous launch numbers to compare with.

  • Has already sold over 1/4 of total lifetime units for the Wii U (per ComputerBase)
  • The first Switch sales hit 2.7 million units sold after four weeks, not four days (per ComputerBase)
  • It could easily overtake the PlayStation 4 sales record of 4.2 million units, which took several weeks to achieve (per ComputerBase)
  • The PlayStation 5 reportedly took almost two months to reach 4.5 million units sold (via GameRant), but this did happen during the pandemic, when supply chains were strained
  • Already nearly beating total sales numbers (as of February 2025, via The Verge), for Valve’s Steam Deck, at somewhere near 4 million units sold

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
