Introduction
In this review, we are evaluating another new, refreshed AM5 socket motherboard from MSI. We take a step up in the overall tiers to the MSI Performance Gaming level for the MSI MPG X870E CARBON MAX WiFi.
We have reviewed a number of newly released “MAX” boards from MSI, which represent a refinement of existing products. The “MAX” moniker tells you that the motherboard has added elements over the prior releases. In this case, we reviewed the non-MAX MPG X870E CARBON WiFi when it was released in September of 2024. We will take a close look at what has changed between these two versions as we go through the review.
The MSI MPG tier of motherboards for socket AM5 currently has three boards: the CARBON, the EDGE Ti, and the EDGE Ti EVO. In reviewing specifications, the MPG X870E CARBON MAX WiFi seems to be the most well-equipped. The EDGE motherboards are offered in white, while the CARBON is an all-black aesthetic. Overall, the MPG tier of boards is equipped for overclocking, has been outfitted with more robust power stages and heatsinks, offers a very generous level of connectivity, and a bit more in the way of RGB. For a tour of the AM5 chipset strategy, please look here.
The release of the MPG X870E CARBON MAX WiFi adds a larger BIOS chip, the MSI “OC Engine”, a few more BIOS selections, and a robust cooling solution over and above what was already a feature-rich non-MAX MPG CARBON WiFi motherboard. Currently offered at $499, the board comes with a three-year warranty.
Packaging and Contents

The motherboard was sent to us directly from MSI. This is a full retail version and was packaged in a sturdy double-layer box. The box is quite heavy. Inside, we have the motherboard in a thick anti-static bag. The antenna sits on top, and the accessories underneath. Accessories include: EZ Conn cable, RGB extension cable, EZ front panel cable, two SATA cables, EZ Clip and EZ Clip tool, stickers, booklets, and the WiFi antenna.
