The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is perhaps the most modded title in video game history, and now one user has managed to get NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 neural rendering working in it. NVIDIA previewed DLSS 5 Neural Rendering back in March, showing how the new technology can create photorealistic renders from a game’s preexisting content/textures. The new feature quickly became controversial as players decried how it could drastically change some imagery beyond an artist’s or developer’s intent, but in some instances it did receive praise for upgrading older titles that use outdated rendering methods or textures.

Well, one thing 2026 can be known for now is how many “leaks” within the gaming industry have occurred, thus providing access to users ahead of an official release. Most recently, DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction made its debut in a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare beta before NVIDIA launched it during Gamescom, but ironically enough, before that, a DLSS 5 Neural Rendering DLL file was discovered in an early-access version of NBA 2K27. User Puredark (via TechPowerUp) has managed to get DLSS 5 NR working in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim using said DLL file, and there’s probably more than a few folks who might agree the results are promising, to say the least.

Now, could someone achieve the same or better results using any of the bazillion mods available for TES V? Well, probably, but the point here is that this is a hardware-supported feature which would need little to no interaction from the user beyond a potential in-game toggle. NVIDIA previously stated that developers would be able to choose the settings for DLSS 5 NR.

“DLSS 5 provides game developers with detailed controls for intensity, color grading and masking, so artists can determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain each game’s unique aesthetic. Integration is seamless, using the same NVIDIA Streamline framework used by existing DLSS and NVIDIA Reflex technologies.”

So there you have it, once again another mod for Skyrim, that while technically still unavailable, showing how the game is still capable of modernday upgrades.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
