Squadron 42, the single-player component of Star Citizen, now has its own official Steam page where those interested can wishlist it in hopes it actually releases next year. To be fair, developer updates for Squadron 42 indicate the game is more or less ready for release, but given the 14 years and over $1 billion invested in Star Citizen, some ridicule is warranted. Squadron 42 was originally slated for a 2026 release, but Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts announced a few months ago the decision to push it back to Q2 2027 in order to avoid having to compete with the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, a decision that more than a few other game publishers also made throughout the years. Rockstar also pushed back the launch of GTA 6 multiple times, thus causing a dance, if you will, among publishers hoping to dodge its constantly moved release date. So, now we’re getting closer to what is believed to be a behemoth launch, and Robert’s has taken the next step for Squadron 42 by getting its Steam Page setup.

“Enlist in the UEE Navy in a cinematic, single-player space adventure. Pilot combat ships, fight on foot, and explore capital ships, space stations, and frontier outposts. Live and work alongside your crew as you battle on the front lines of a galactic war.”

– Cloud Imperium Games

A new cinematic trailer titled The Oath has been released to commemorate the occasion, showing off the numerous movie actors who are featured in the game. So unless one of the developers happens to see their shadow, or perhaps someone gets cold feet at the last minute, we should see Squadron 42 make its official debut in Spring 2027.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
