CD Projekt Red Exec Says Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Movie Will Be Its Own Story and Not an Adaptation of the Game

A Cyberpunk 2077 movie is in the works but according to CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, fans shouldn’t expect to see one-to-one adaptation of the game. Per Deadline, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (numerous newer Transformers and G.I Joe Movies, Madame Web, The Meg 1 and 2, and many more) is working with Paramount Pictures, to bring the popular IP to the big screen. So far not much else has been said about the project but Michał shared in a recent interview with PAP Biznes how CD Projekt Red has a different vision for the film. “At this point, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story,” said Nowakowski.

Now does this absolutely mean we won’t see Keannu Reeves make an appearance as Johnny Silverhand, well, not neccesarily. CDPR and movie execs could certainly include a cameo or reference while still doing an original story. Nightcity has enough lore to rely on and CDPR’s collaboration with Netflix has proven to be successful in creating new content with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which by the way has its second season debut today, October 20, and even updated the game to include easter eggs referencing the series for the first season and another update is coming to include content for the second. So don’t count Keannu or Idris out yet since fan-service is commonplace in hollywood, even if its just for a short moment but even if they are left out, CDPR has started out on the right path with Netflix and might be able to do so again with Paramount.

Meanwhile this latest project with Paramout Pictures represents the studio’s current gambit in adapting multiple videogame IPs. From Street Fighter which was released last week, to Call of Duty project in the works, the studio is taking a stab in bringing various action games to the big screen. The choice to utilize producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is a natural fit since he’s already worked with Paramount on various other projects as well.
