Assassin’s Creed Codename RED will let players stealth and kill their way through Japan as a non-Asian samurai, but it won’t be Tom Cruise.
According to an exclusive story from Insider Gaming, the male lead of Assassin’s Creed Codename RED will actually be Yasuke, an African samurai who apparently existed in real life and lived during Japan’s Sengoku period.
Yasuke is set to join “Naoe,” a female ninja who is seeking revenge, as revealed earlier by a leak from one of the Assassin’s Creed writers and the @xj0nathan account:
…the game will have two playable characters. Speaking with sources, Insider Gaming understands that the male character is certainly Yasuke, but his story has been rewritten to align with the game’s story and direction.
Earlier this year, Twitter user j0nathan revealed some details on the female protagonist named “Naoe” who is on a quest for revenge following the death of her father. Insider Gaming can corroborate this information, with Naoe’s full name currently being called Naoe Fujibayashi – The daughter of the legendary real-life Fujibayashi Nagato, who is considered to be one of the three greatest Iga jōnin.

Insider Gamer also seems to know Yasuke’s background story for Assassin’s Creed Codename RED already, although it doesn’t quite line up with what the real Yasuke saw:
Yasuke was a slave traveling on a slave ship when it was attacked and everyone was killed, including his lover, but he survived. Yasuke was then rescued and brought to Japan, where he learned the way of the samurai under Nobunaga’s service.
Naoe and Yasuke will supposedly be enemies at the beginning of Assassin’s Creed Codename RED but become allies later in the game.
Assassin’s Creed Codename RED is also said to feature a number of other historical figures, including one of the most popular ninjas ever, Hattori Hanzo.
