Star Wars Outlaws, the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, will feature a special 21:9 cinematic mode that creates a widescreen effect, one that replicates the lenses that George Lucas and other filmmakers used when shooting the original, classic film trilogy (i.e., A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi), according to several hands-on reports that have surfaced online for the game today, including one from PlayStation that explains how its developer, Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, has designed the game to be authentic to the source material. The new action-adventure game, which stars a female scoundrel named Kay Vess, will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PCs on August 30.

From a hands-on report:

  • “The Star Wars Outlaws team knows it’s a big deal to set its game between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and has gone the extra parsecs to make it feel authentic to its source material.”
  • “…you can select a special 21.9 cinematic mode that creates a widescreen effect and replicates the lenses Lucasfilm used when shooting Episodes 4 to 6. The result is a gritty, nostalgic visual grain with a modern-day high-definition punch.”
  • “Ubisoft Massive has also created discoverable vista points where you can stop and watch beautiful-yet-deadly world go by. The scenic views are striking enough to encourage players to seek them all out.”
  • “…yes, you can [even] pet the…well, animals far more exotic than dogs, and even feed some of the fauna native to Toshara.”

A new behind-the-scenes look at the game:

Game description:

Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Explore distinct locations across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.
