SILENT HILL 2, a remake of the survival horror sequel from Konami and Team Silent that follows widower James Sunderland as he journeys into the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from Mary—his dead wife—may actually live up to the original game, which released for PS2, Xbox, and Windows PC in September 2001, according to positive reactions that developer Bloober Team is now seeing following the release of a new story trailer that debuted today, one that offers a look at the title’s updated graphics, cinematic cutscenes, and more. The new and positive reception comes as Akira Yamaoka, the composer behind SILENT HILL 2 and numerous other games in the series, revealed in a recent preview event that he had “reworked” the entirety of the original soundtrack despite knowing how “beloved” it is.

Critics are saying:

  • “This looks unusually better than the early trailers they released.”
  • “Aside from Maria talking like she’s in an infomercial at the start, this is an A+ trailer.”
  • “I’ve to say the Story trailer is the first one I really liked. Time for optimism I guess!”
  • “I don’t know who made this trailer but they need to get a raise.”
  • “I like how they saved all the scary parts for the game instead of revealing it in the trailer.”
  • “If this remake success, then we might have chance seeing silent hill 1 remake and silent hill 3 remake in the future.”

Yamaoka on the new soundtrack:

  • “I have reworked all the tracks. There are segments and bits and pieces of the original tracks that you can hear, but all of the tracks have been reworked from the ground up.”
  • “I understand that the soundtrack is very much beloved, but ultimately I composed over nine hours worth of music and I’m still wondering how in the world we are going to fit all of that into a soundtrack.”
  • “I had to be very creative [back then] because I had the passion to make something great. But now, unfortunately, I can’t quite remember that part of me as vividly.”
  • “I can’t replicate the same circumstances I was in 25 years ago. But I still want to deliver something that is fresh for both existing fans and newcomers.”
