The Xbox Series S, a fourth-generation video game console that Microsoft launched in November 2020 as a weaker, lower-priced alternative to the flagship Xbox Series X, delivering 1440p rather than what has been described as true 4K gaming resolution for players, should have never been made, according to new comments shared by Del Walker, an industry veteran and character artist whose credits include Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, The Last of Us Part II, and, most recently, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The comments from Walker come a couple of years after Jim Ryan, the former President and CEO of PlayStation, told a publication that Sony never bothered with a “low priced, reduced spec” PS5, as such consoles have “not had great results in the past.”

Walker said:

  • “I wish the Series S never existed, man.”
  • “So annoying to optimize for that console.”
  • “I expect we’ll unfortunately see more game launches get skipped by Xbox in the future.”

The original word from Walker:

Ryan said in 2020:

  • “Clearly, price is a very important factor. We respect other companies’ competitive strategies. However, we are fully committed to and believe in our current strategy and the effect it will have.”
  • “One thing that can be said is that if you look at the history of the game business, creating a special low priced, reduced spec console is something that has not had great results in the past.”
  • “We’ve considered that option and seen other executives who have attempted this discover how problematic it is.”
