RDNA 4, a new graphics architecture that will be powering AMD’s next generation of graphics products, including the Radeon RX 8000 Series, is set to introduce several performance improvements, including those in the realm of ray tracing, according to new details about the PS5 Pro that lead architect Mark Cerny has shared as part of hands-on report regarding Sony’s newly unveiled system. Cerny, whose previous credits include the PS3, PS4, and PS5, mentioned that the PS5 Pro’s advanced ray tracing tech, which is advertised as being 3x better than the base model, cannot be found on any existing AMD GPU yet.
Cerny said:
- “PS5 Pro uses the new advanced [ray tracing] feature sets that AMD created as the next step in their roadmap architecture.”
- “But if you look around, there are no other AMD GPUs that use it yet.”
- “We motivated the development, and I’m very happy we did so — the response from the developers has been extraordinarily great.”
One outlet’s experience with the new $700 console:
CNET noted in its coverage:
…expect a lot more ray-tracing, a fancy graphical technique to simulate light. Expect games to get Pro-upgraded performance extras — Sony says about 40 to 50 games will get patches when the system launches in November.
I played Gran Turismo 7 in an 8K mode and a 4K mode that added all sorts of extra ray-tracing effects. Much like PC games, Cerny said the Pro could spark a range of extra gaming modes.
