Google Begins Removing Ad-Block Extension uBlock Origin from Chrome Web Store: “Doesn’t Follow Best Practices”

uBlock Origin, the free and open-source extension for Chrome, Firefox, and other popular internet browsers that advertises itself as more than just a simple ad-blocker, allowing users to block a “wide spectrum” of content with CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature, will soon be removed from the Chrome Web Store because it doesn’t follow best practices for Chrome extensions, Google has revealed. The warning comes several years after Google introduced Manifest V3, an update to Chrome’s extension API that, while introducing security improvements, reduced the effectiveness of uBlock Origin in Chromium-based browsers. uBlock Origin Lite, an alternative that was created to comply with Manifest V3, remains available but lacks some key features, including custom filters.

At this point, you have several options: 1. Stay on Google Chrome and enable enterprise policy ExtensionManifestV2Availability so as to extend Manifest v2 support and therefore uBlock Origin (Manifest v2) support till June 2025. 2. Stay on Google Chrome, uninstall uBlock Origin (Manifest v2), and install uBlock Origin Lite (Manifest v3). The latter lacks many features of the former, but should be good enough for casual users. 3. Stay on Google Chrome, uninstall uBlock Origin (Manifest v2), and install AdGuard (Manifest v3).
