NVIDIA has posted a set of DLSS 3 benchmarks for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, revealing that GeForce RTX 40 Series users should see an average of 2.4X greater performance at 4K with every setting maxed when the first-person survival horror shooter from Ukrainian developer GSC Game World launches tomorrow. See below for the latest benchmarks from NVIDIA, which show the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER running at 87 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER surpassing 100 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER surpassing 112 FPS, and the GeForce RTX 4090 surpassing 120 FPS, alongside a new comparison trailer.

At 2560×1440, a 2X multiplier enables 100 FPS-plus max setting gameplay on a wide variety of configurations, and up to 145 FPS on the most powerful systems. At 1920×1080, all GeForce RTX 40 Series desktop graphics cards can play well in excess of 60 FPS thanks to the power of DLSS 3 with Frame Generation and Super Resolution, which delivers a 1.9X average boost to frame rates at max settings. On GeForce RTX 40 Series laptops, a 2X DLSS 3 multiplier at both 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 ensures many mobile battlestations can play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl maxed out, for the definitive experience on the go.

Yeah, screw that.

I don't want any fake pixels or fake frames.

If you enable Frame Generation, yes you would get some well frames generated. Not the case with plain DLSS. But you will notice that nvidia ran their 4K in DLSS performance mode, which is geared to generate the most FPS at some degradation of quality. It would be nice to know the FPS running DLSS Quality mode. None the less, for smooth gaming in these titles with "aging" GPUs DLSS is unfortunately necessary. Sad to see that the 4090 can only muster 52FPS without DLSS. I giess I'm going to have to pony up $2500 for one of those fancy 5090s when they come around....choke, choke.

I also found it annoying that they were not consistent.

Quality mode + DLSS3 frame gen fro 1080p and 1440p, but only Performance mode 9 DLSS3 fame gen in 4k.

Might just have to wait for next gen RTX 5000 series to play this adequately at 4k.

In some of these tests it almost looks like it is CPU limited, which is weird for a 14900k. I wonder how this had looked if it were on a 9800x3d.

I'm sorry but DLSS is NOT 4k.

You are correct. But if all I have to eat is Spam, then it will be delicious.
This game runs poorly natively, even with a 4090.
You need help. Even if it isnt "true" 4K you can play it well and get the highest visual allowed in that circumstance. Outside areas at night, I got 80 to 90 FPS on a 4090/5800X3D combination using DLSS-quality and no FrameGen. Otherwise everything set to "Epic".

At best, I've read mixed things about this one. A shame because it is a genre I like but not touching this until I hear it's patched up and it sounds like it will take more than few to get it there.

I might give them a pass and buy this one as it's a Ukrainian developed game. They will know war and post war stuff better than most.

Yeah I give them props for continuing to develop the game in the middle of real-life war. They were in Kyiv, and for a while they put development on hold indefinitely while some of their staff fled their homes or joined the Ukranian army. Then they moved development of the game over to Prague where they managed to finally finish it. So I wish them the best, and success with their game. After all those years of development, they need it.

Yeah, I was going to wait to buy until it is fixed, but I think this might be one of those rare exceptions where I am willing to just go ahead and buy it, because these people have really put in a heroic effort during very trying times in their country.

Would be interesting - considering the time and effort they have put in to depict the Ukrainian country-side if someone modded this to make a war game out of it, covering the current Russian invasion.

Same here. Unfortunately this is the game industry now. Hurry up and get the game out now and worry about patching it later.

This is possibly the first time I'll give a full pass on that because the circumstances of the developers.

Well, shit

I bought it on Steam out of habit.

Maybe I'll just return it and buy it on GoG...

I did some testing of the game last night.

While it looks absolutely gorgeous, I was about to give the experience a pretty harsh review, but then I remembered that I hadn't upgraded my Nvidia drivers. Last time I upgraded them was probably to play Starfield.

So, take everything performance-related below with a truckload of salt until I re-test with the latest drivers.

Performance related comments

So, on my system (Threadripper 3960, GeForce 4090) at to and everything at "epic" but DLSS and frame Gen disabled (using TAA 100%) I am stuck in the high 40's to low 50's in the games early scenes.

I suspect I am CPU limited, as if I switch to DLSS quality, I see next to no improvement. Maybe 1-2 FPS

The only way I can make it playable at these setrings is by enabling DLSS3 frame Gen. Then we immediately jump up to about 100fps. This LOOKS smoother to the eye, but mouse feel is laggy, jerky and it stutters like crazy.

It's playable maybe, but I wouldn't want to play the game like this.

I am going to try the latest Nvidia drivers, and maybe disabling SMT to see if that helps, (24C/48T often confuses games) but if it doesn't, this is probably the end of the road for the Threadripper (from a gaming perspective.)

The Threadripper has been a trooper over the last 5 years, but it might just be time for the looming upgrade.

I have ordered some water cooling parts from Watercool.de in Germany for a massive overkill water-cooled rack mount build, but they seem to be taking forever to ship. (Been listed as paid, not shipped for 7 days now). Not sure what is going on there. But once they arrive I will start putting together the loop and ordering parts for an AM5 system.

It will probably be a 9800x3D (if they don't wind up being unobtanium)

Right now the plan is to transfer the 4090 over from the Threadripper and keep the threadripper as my workstation, probably transplanting it into a rack mount case as well. It still does a good job as a workstation. It will need a GPU. I'm considering a contemporary workstation GPU I can pick up at relative low cost. Maybe a Radeon Pro w5700 as I have seen them on eBay for not very much money.

Gameplay related comments

So, overall, apart from my performance issues, the opening scene seems to play well.

Only gripe is one that I see time and time again in new games. Key bindings. I don't understand why this is so hard to get right.

I must be one of the few people out there who still uses arrow keys for games, having refused to move WASD as I didn't think it made any sense the first time around, and still don't think it does.

Having rebound WASD movement keys to arrow keys (up=forward, down=backward, left=strafe left, right=strafe right) this works just fine, until you try to climb a ladder. On ladders you still have to use W for up and S for down.

Annoying.

Also, as part of my standard keyboard bindings for FPS games, I make use of keys on the numpad for many things. Binding those works in the GUI config, but in actual game it ignores those bindings, and the numpad keys just act as some sort of weird camera free-look control.

There is nothing here I couldn't work around by remapping keys in the OS, but that is annoying, and I shouldn't have to do it.
