As I read the headline I realized I had no idea what "hall effect sticks" were, so I clicked to read more.

I still haven't figured out what "hall effect sticks" are, because I went on a tangent trying to figure out why a controller would need a cooling plate.

OH. It's for mobile gaming. (In other words completely uninteresting)

Moving on. (I guess I'll never know what "hall effect sticks" are.)

(Thuogh having lived through the "sandwich a Peltier between my CPU and copper heat sink" era I have to admit I am pretty amused that kids are now strapping Peltier coolers to their phones, especially because of how inefficient they are. I wouldn't have expected them to find their way onto anything battery powered.)

A Hall effect sensor is a device that detects and measures the strength of a magnetic field by producing a voltage proportional to the field's strength, based on the principle that when an electrical current flows through a conductor placed within a perpendicular magnetic field, a voltage difference develops across the conductor, known as the Hall effect; essentially, it converts magnetic field information into an electrical signal.

Meaning that it senses movement by the Hall effect produced in the physical movement. So not subject to degradation of hardware normally present in resistance based sensors.

Hall effect sensors for analog sticks became popular to eliminate stick drift, which is a pretty f*cking annoying problem.
