Resident Evil 5, a fifth mainline installment of Capcom’s leading survival horror series that saw franchise veteran Chris Redfield team with Sheva Alomar against zombies, Tricell, and Albert Wesker in West Africa, is coming to the Xbox Series X|S—over 15 years after its original release for PS3 and Xbox 360 in March 2009—according to a new Mature rating for the game that has surfaced on the official ESRB website.
“This is a survival-horror game in which players assume the roles of two agents attempting to stop a viral outbreak. From a third-person perspective, players explore environments, solve puzzles, and battle mutated humans and creatures,” a rating summary from the ESRB reads.
“Players use pistols, shotguns, machine guns, knives, and grenades to kill enemies. Combat is highlighted by cries of pain, realistic gunfire, and blood-splatter effects. Some attacks result in dismemberment and/or decapitation. Several environments depict bloodstains, corpses, and internal organs scattered around,” it continues. “Cutscenes depict further instances of violence and/or blood and gore: a man eaten by a crocodile; a character dramatically impaled; a character killed by a chainsaw attack; a character bit in half by a mutated creature. The word ‘f**k’ appears in the game.”
News of Resident Evil 5’s apparent Xbox Series X|S release comes just a few weeks after the ESRB indicated that RE6 would also be coming to Microsoft’s current-generation consoles, similarly rated Mature for blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, and other such subject matter.
“I can finally be a buff white man who yells at a minority woman and not get in trouble. This game really has it all,” reads one review that a Resident Evil 5 player with 66 hours submitted to Steam today.
“This game is an absolute blast to play, especially if you can find a friend or a stranger to experience it with!” opined another. “Every chapter is pure fun as you immerse yourself in Chris ‘the Boulder-punch’ Redfield’s action-packed journey with a new partner – Sheva Alomar – as he attempts to survive and uncover the truth in the world’s most recent turnup in global bioterrorism.”
